Please note that enrollment of each class is limited (6-10 students). Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, and placement is not secured until full payment is received.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Everyone! However please note that each course is tailored for a specific audience, reflecting different levels of photographic knowledge and experience. You should only enroll in a workshop level that reflects your current photographic level, as described bellow. If you’re not sure where you fit, no problem: shoot us an email or call us anytime and we’ll be happy to advise you personally.
3HOUR Crash Courses: you may enroll in these crash courses without any previous photographic practice. If you’re a point-and-shoot kinda photographer, these are for you!
3WEEK Ateliers: you understand the foundations of photographic culture, i.e. how a Single-Lens-Reflex camera operates, how to override automatic programs and expose frames setting your own lens apertures and shutter-speeds, how to compose photogenic imagery. You just want to push things further and enrich your photography with refined exposure strategies, professional materials and systems, strobe lighting, medium/large format photography and artistic saviness when it comes to interpreting the meaning of photographic work.
6WEEK Advanced Portfolios Workshops: you already are a photographer, and a good one at that. You want to carefully focus your time and effort on specific areas and themes. You need to better conceive of your photographic subjects, and come through as innovative for a particular fine art project of yours. You wish to integrate more academic, critical ore theoretical readings into the presentation of your work. We’re here to help. And we’ll love to hear about your own unique photographic fascinations.
WHERE ARE THE WORKSHOPS TAUGHT?
Image Maker Photography Studio, 2075 Yukon Street (intersection of Yukon and West 2nd), suite 210 in Vancouver.
IF I CAN’T MAKE IT TO A SESSION, CAN I ARRANGE A MAKE-UP CLASS?
If you expect to miss a meeting, please do your best to notify the instructor Virginie Lamarche or Bastien Desfriches Doria ASAP. Detailed handouts will be provided at no cost in the event that new technical information was covered during your absence. It is also possible to schedule a 1-hour make-up meeting with your instructor for a $50 fee.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
At VNB our goal is to make Film Photography as accessible and easy to (re)take up as possible, so we offer a simple flat fee walk-in policy: whatever the Crash Course or Atelier you’re interested in, you can just show up completely empty handed and we’ll take care of everything: we’ll provide you with the camera system you need, as well as film for it, and any other miscellaneous piece of equipment that may be required, such as a tripod, a handheld light-meter, developing & printing chemistry for darkroom work, negative sleeves, down to even a bubble-level! All of this for a low $45 flat fee! We understand that finding and buying used or new analog photography equipment is not as easy and convenient as it used to be, so VNB allows you to have fun with film photography without too much financial commitment. Simply put, VNB gives you the freedom to only purchase your own equipment once you know you’re into Film Photography! And we may of course help you with that too.
HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL BE IN THE CLASS?
Each running workshop requires a minimum enrollment of 2 to 3 students (darkroom workshops run from 2 students, while others require at least 3). The maximum number of students you can expect in our workshops will not exceed 6 to 10 (6 for darkroom workshops and 10 for all others).
WORKSHOPS REQUIREMENTS:
Most Fine Art Photo Workshops require some level of previous photographic knowledge or practice in order to be eligible to enroll. Please check the online course information for full details. If unsure of where you stand with regards to enrollment requirements for any workshop of interest, please don’t hesitate to call or email Virginie or Bastien (or both!).
INSUFFICIENT ENROLLMENT:
If a workshop happens to have insufficient enrollment to run five (5) days before commencement, it will unfortunately have to be postponed or canceled. In that event, registered students will be immediately notified and all registration fees will be refunded, unless transferred to another scheduled and opened workshop.
WEATHER:
As I am sure you well know the Pacific Northwest is prone to rainy days, especially during the winter season. Vancouver being no exception, the possibility of having to reschedule field trips, outdoors demonstrations or training because of bad weather exists. If such (un)exceptional circumstances were to interfere too much with a scheduled photographic outing, the outdoor photographic session will be postponed to the closest available possible date.
Students may opt to take the rescheduled field trip, or not. However no refunds will be offered on account of bad weather.
PAYMENT REQUIRED:
Payment in full is required to hold your registration. Courses may be subject to changes in schedule or cancellation with a full refund due to insufficient enrollment.
PAYMENT METHOD:
We only accept Paypal payments (Visa, Mastercard, American Express). Our workshop online payments are 100% Paypal secured. No cash or checks please.
INSTRUCTOR ILLNESS:
We are pretty strong people, and we feel pretty good most of the time. But hey, we’re only human. On very rare occasion your favorite instructor may find himself/herself a bit under the weather. Yes, you may offer the Frenchies hot wine (or any wine for that matter). But in the meantime we will notify you and each individual student as early as possible if one of us was unable to make it to your workshop. Of course all efforts will be made to find a replacement instructor prior to cancellation of a workshop. Since we at VNB are two, there’s a good chance that you see “the other” walk-in then for a change.
